SOS Round 11: Gaugeler Cup 5th Round Action

Marcel Du Plessis Becomes First Player to Defend Title

Saturday the 27th of October saw the playing of the 5th edition of the Gaugeler, which was hosted at the Observatory Golf Club in Kensington, Johannesburg. Affectionately known as Obgusta, the course was in fantastic condition and made for some good golf on the day.

A large field of 25 golfers teed it up on the tenth hole in pursuit of the crown at the end of the day. As the Gaugeler Cup was hosted on the same day as the Currie Cup Final between Western Province and The Sharks, the team competition was divided into teams of Western Province and the Sharks. And just like the Currie Cup, Province prevailed as champions captained by Andrew ‘Chip’ Robertson.

Marcel ‘Marsehole’ Du Plessis became the first player to defend his crown in this relatively young tournament, shooting a fantastic 40 points after a near faultless front nine. Hot on his heels was Damian Murphy, Grant Moolman and Ryan Bernberg who made up the other top four positions. Special mention must be made of Nick Rebello who shot a personal best round of 32 points for 5th place and he has proved that being a part of the SOS Golf Tour can do wonders for your game. He picked up the game early this year and has already settled into the proverbial swing of things.

Obgusta Golf Club in Observatory

The course rewarded clever golf and played very true on every hole. We were able to trust the roll on all the greens and Obgusta is in good condition at this time of year. Playing through a chorus of “four” that echoes out across the very narrow parklands course, was a great day out for all who played.

The prize giving ceremony was graciously hosted by Chip, and the prizes that were given out to the winning players were generously given to the Tour by Cobra Puma Golf and Suvan Singh. The fantastic products provided by Cobra and Puma made the winners on the day the envy of everybody who played, and Marcel also became the first person to win the Orange Jacket as Gaugeler Cup winner.

For the SOS Tour, it was mostly the Tour Players who came out on top form, with nearly all the points for this, the 10th round going to SOS Tour members.

Everybody is looking forward to next year’s of Gaugeler Cup and the upcoming round of the SOS Tour at Glendower.
